When people think of captive insurance, they often picture a single large company or a group of similar businesses. But what about a family-owned organization with diverse operations, spanning farms, hotels, wineries, schools, retail, casinos and more, across dozens of states? Captive Advisory Partners (CAP) has the expertise to handle that level of complexity as well.
Senior Consultant Nancy Glennon was introduced to an organization like this through a business partner referral. The client, a large family-owned conglomerate, faced significant challenges in the traditional insurance market. With more than 60 separate policies covering a wide range of exposures, they were dealing with administrative inefficiencies, inconsistent renewal dates, and limited coverage options—particularly for risks with specialized needs.
Recognizing the opportunity, Nancy guided the client toward a captive insurance solution. Over the course of two years, CAP worked closely with the client’s Risk Control Manager to gather data, analyze loss history, and design a more effective structure.
The result was a streamlined, centralized program that consolidated property and casualty coverage under one coordinated structure. CAP partnered with alternative market providers to establish primary layers while securing excess coverage through Bermuda and London markets. The new program also incorporated previously excluded exposures, including flood, and significantly increased umbrella capacity.
Beyond improved coverage, the new structure delivered operational and financial benefits. With a single renewal date and fewer carrier relationships to manage, the client gained efficiency and clarity. The program was structured to allow a portion of the risk to be reinsured into the captive, enabling the organization to retain underwriting profits and allocate premiums more effectively across its individual businesses based on loss performance. Additionally, the scale of the account enabled CAP to provide enhanced, targeted risk control services for wildfire-prone areas.
Nancy continues to work with the client to further expand the program, including exploring the addition of Workers’ Compensation and Commercial Auto. These enhancements are expected to drive even greater efficiencies and long-term value.
This engagement highlights how captive solutions can be tailored not only for large, single-entity risks, but also for complex, multi-industry organizations seeking greater control, flexibility, and financial benefit from their insurance programs.
If you have a client who may benefit from a captive solution or would simply like to learn more about what types of businesses may qualify, we encourage you to schedule a brief 15-minute introductory call with a CAP consultant. We’d welcome the opportunity to discuss potential options and next steps.
